Codey and Alexis have known each other for almost 10 years. They grew up in the same town and graduated 3 years apart. Codey has been in the military for the past 6 ½ years. Alexis graduated in May of 2013 and went to South Africa with Global Year for the next nine months. Upon returning home Codey and Alexis got married on January 1, 2015 and have been living in Anchorage AK ever since. About a year after they were married the Lord began to call them into missions full time. They are very excited to be apart of the Global Year team!
Q&A with Codey & Alex
If you weren’t in ministry, what would you be doing? Why?
Alexis: I would be in some sort of medical field. Nursing or still in school to be a doctor.
Codey: I would most likely remain in the military. I had full intentions on staying in until the Lord called me to full-time ministry.
What’s on your plate for dinner?
Alexis: Usually some sort of veggies with chicken or ground turkey. I change things up a lot so I don’t get bored!
Codey: Anything my wife makes because it’s so good! But my absolute favorite is ground turkey sloppy joes over sweet potatoes.
Talk about how your childhood has affected your life today.
Alexis: My childhood taught me how to dream big and work hard. My mom always pushed me to be whatever I wanted to be. She taught me how to take dreams and hard work and combine them to meet goals. I am so thankful that she always encouraged me not to quit (no matter how much I wanted to)
Codey: If my parents taught me anything, it’s that you work hard for what you want. Despite my parents divorcing, they stayed friendly for my sake. I cannot begin to thank them enough for that. Each made sure I was in church, and they loved me like Jesus despite my flaws.
When did you make Jesus your Lord and Savior?
Alexis: I have gone to church my entire life. But, I had no idea what following Jesus meant. I made Jesus my Lord my senior year in February 2013 at a DNOW conference.
Codey: I made Jesus the Lord of my life on January 19, 2013. Prior to this, I was an atheist despite growing up in church. I loved the world more than Him, but He pursued me still. I always knew He was chasing me, but I made the best decision of my life that day.
Other than Jesus, who has been an influential person(s) in your life?
Alexis: my husband Codey has been such an encourager most of my adult life. He has walked with me through some of the darkness times in my life and loved me through all of them. Kristy Scroggins took me under her wing when I needed her the most. She loved me through the horrible teen choices I was making and helped me understand what it means to be a Godly wife as well!
Codey: Alex has been my most faithful friend in my entire life. We knew each other prior to dating, and I am happy to say I really did marry my best friend! She holds me together when I really want to give up. I know she will always be by my side as long as she’s alive. The strongest male influence of my life has been Brandon Scroggins. He knew me before I was saved; he has helped me grow in my faith, and has been a major influencer in continuing my education.
What Bible verse best describes you?
Alexis: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously at all without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” – James 1:5-6
Codey: “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” –Philippians 3:8
What’s your favorite movie? Why?
Alexis: This one is tough because I love so many movies! Despicable Me, Hunger Games, and Hidden Figures
Codey: I am not a big movie watcher, but if I had to pick one I would say Forrest Gump. Sometimes I just want to run too!
Other than Jesus, who would you most like to have lunch with?
Alexis: I’d love to have lunch with my dad one last time!
Codey: Polycarp, he was a boss!
What’s your secret ambition?
Alexis: To become a nurse midwife and be able to live in a rural area to help with childbirth.
Codey: To run a marathon and to earn a Ph.D.
What favorite books, besides the Bible, are on your shelf?
Alexis: Redeeming Love, Don’t Waste Your Life, and Let the Nations Be Glad
Codey: Radical, If You Can Keep It, and The Cost of Discipleship
